Round 5

AJAX v Whitefriars - Away
An early start at Whitefriars against a team sitting just above us on the ladder meant it was going to take a real team effort to get the points.
It was a foggy start to the day and whilst the Jackettes had much of the early play scoring a couple of behinds, it was Whitefriars who got off to a great start, scoring the first major. We seemed to have the majority of the play but went in behind at quarter time. J Caplan, Gabriel and Goldman provided our spark, whilst Nankin, Aarons and Ossip were looking dangerous up forward.
The 2nd quarter began well with the girls having the majority of the play and when Nankin scored our first goal, it put us 4 points to the good at half time. Boylan and Cobbe were again having an impact as was Shustin who had the job on the oppositions best player.
Whitefriars started the better in the 3rd term and had a couple of strong opportunities before Nankin snapped her 2nd on the run. Goldman, J Caplan and Boylan continued their good form with Shustin coming in to her own. Jacobs was having her best game and Gunn was doing a great job on the competitions leading goalscorer. Mrocki was starting to have an impact on the wing.
We started the last quarter 7 points in front and the girls were confident they could win at ¾ time. We finished the last quarter full of running and when Boylan took a huge mark and converted from 30m out it stretched the lead to 13 points. The girls held on well in the last few minutes and ran out convincing winners.
Next week it’s Latrobe Uni at Princes Park.
