Round 9

AJAX v Bulleen Templestowe - Home
In what promised to be an exciting day for the Jackettes and AJAX we had club stalwart Mika Grek playing her 100th game in our first home game of the season.
Mika is truly a legend of the club, being a most dependable defender since playing her first senior game 9 years ago, in the clubs first senior women’s game. She is reliable, consistent and a real team player who is loved and admired by all. The girls were looking to make this a memorable day for her against Bulleen Templestowe.
In tricky conditions, with the wind blowing a gale across the ground, Mika won the toss for the Jackettes and chose to head towards what was hoped to be the scoring end.
The first quarter was played predominantly in our half, but scoring proved to be difficult. Our midfielders, Boylan, Cobbe, J Caplan and Goldman were on top early, driving the ball forward. Marget took a great mark and just missed to the left and with A Caplan in her first game back for several weeks getting a lot of the ball, the signs looked good. Unfortunately we couldn’t score a major and went into the first break a point in front.
The second quarter was all about strong defending. Gabriel again lead the backs and performed strongly along with Brophy, Grek and Gunn. It was Cobbe who scored the first goal with a terrific snap. Shustin was well on top on a wing, with A Caplan dominating on the other wing. We kept Bulleen scoreless as we kicked against the wind, which was a terrific achievement.
We started well in the 3rd quarter and had most of the play. Scoring again was difficult with the breeze still very strong. After a good mark, Cobbe lined up from about 35 meters out and the ball sailed right over the goal umpired head. It was a beautiful kick and made even more amazing that Cobbe had only kicked a footy for the first time during pre season. Keating was giving us first use in the ruck and brought Goldberg, Folwell and Nankin into the game. Sharbanee and Cain were both looking dangerous up forward.
We took a 2 goal lead into the last quarter and the brief was to defend and make sure that we win the game for Mika and the club. We saw out the last quarter and although it was a very scrappy game, the conditions made it very difficult.
The highlight after the game were the many celebratory dances in our new, spacious club rooms. The Irish in the team have really brought something on the field and as seen in these videos, off the field as well!
Next up is La Trobe away in a game that is very important for our finals prospects.
Goals: Cobbe 2
Bests : Boylin , Cobbe , Shustin , A Caplan , J Caplan ,Gunn.
