Round 14

AJAX v Whitefriars
On an almost perfect winters day we faced Whitefriars in what promised to be a finals like game. A win would cement a finals berth for us and after a good week on the track we were ready to go.
Kicking with the breeze in the first quarter we dominated play and had many chances to secure a good quarter time lead. Nankin was creating opportunities but didn’t have her kicking boots on, kicking 3 behinds in the term, including a poster. Folwell was dominating in the ruck and scored our first for the game and together with A Caplan, Boylan and J Caplan were gathering plenty of touches in the midfield. We had most of the ball in the first term, but missed a few easy goals. 1 goal 5 to no score at quarter time.
Whitefriars were the better team in the 2nd quarter and kicked 2 long goals. Gabriel, Mrocki, Payne-Gill and Brophy had alot of work to do in the backline and Goldman, Shustin and Rainer were doing their best to keep Whitefriars at bay. We trailed by 5 points at half time.
The third quarter was played with the ball in our half, Cobbe, in a welcome return to the team was starting to get on top and with Gabriel controlling the backline and Payne-Gill doing a terrific nullifying job we were getting on top. Folwell was having a breakout game in the ruck and when she calmly slotted her 2nd goal of the game it put us 3 point up at the last change.
We never stopped trying in the last term and had our chances to seal the game. It wasn’t until there was 2 minutes to go in the match that Whitefriars scored a long range goal that bounced through, in what was their only score of the quarter.
A 2 point loss was devastating for us, but we live to fight another day. The season is still in our hands as we face Powerhouse next week.
Goals: Folwell 2
Bests: Folwell, J Caplan, Shustin, Payne-Gill, A Caplan, Boylan.
