AJAX v Glen Eira - Away
In wet and windy conditions we faced rivals Glen Eira away at Packer Park.
We welcomed 7 debutants into our new look side and kicking with the breeze in the first quarter we were looking to start well. We attacked early, but couldn’t convert. Glen Eira rebounded and scored the first goal of the game. Our defenders in Grek, Gabriel, Burstin and Mrocki were holding up well and mids Shustin, J Caplan, Klooger and Marget kept forcing the ball forward. We trailed by 5 points at quarter time. Tuszynski, on debut, scored a terrific goal from a snap shot.
We were under pressure during the 2nd quarter but our defence was holding up well. It wasn’t until the last 14 seconds when Glen Eira took an uncontested mark in front of goal that they goaled and kicked away to a 15 point lead at half time. Goldman, Cobbe, Boylin and Goldberg were trying hard.
We put the pressure back on to Glen Eira in the 3rd term and had much of the play. With rain coming down and the wind blowing, conditions were tough. Co skipper A Caplan lifted her work rate and together with Boylin, Nankin and Cobbe our tackling was now fierce. Payne-Gill did some nice things this quarter, on debut. Goldberg stepped up and goaled and we were 8 points down at ¾ time. In tough conditions for forwards, Riddle, Aarons, Folwell, Ossip and Newitt never stopped presenting.
Kicking against a strong wind and strong rain, we were giving it everything and when Nankin goaled we were 4 points down and full of running. Glen Eira eventually moved the ball forward and a free kick saw them goal and run out winners by 10 points.
We never stopped trying and with 7 debutants today, who will all get better, the signs for 2023 are good.
We look to bounce back against Parkside next week.
Goals: Nankin, Tuszynski, Goldberg
