Round 8
28 May 2022
AJAX v St Bedes/Mentone Tigers
Our season sat at 3-3 with a big game against St Bedes Mentone at Brindisi St ahead of us. The small ground always means plenty of contested football and this contest didn’t disappoint. Another perfect bayside day meant that there would be no excuse for poor skills. The game proved to be very high standard with both sides applying pressure all over the field. We were able to hold off a fast finishing opposition and win a very important game. We sit 4th on the ladder. Reward for effort.
The first quarter began with both sides exerting pressure and commitment. We hit the scoreboard early with goals to Kane Nissenbaum and Toby Sheezel. Toby Lipton continued his excellent form in the ruck and around the ground and Matt Lincoln found space on his wing. We defended the small ground very well and looked to have the better of the opposition. We conceded two late goals which brought the scoreboard back to level at the first break.
We began the second quarter with effort and commitments and it paid dividends. Reece Israel scored a goal from a set shot and Remy Spicer hit the scoreboard with a clever snap from the top of the goal square. We missed a few opportunities that would have put us further in front. Our backline led by Richie Simon and 150 gamer Adam Caplan made scoring very difficult for the opposition. We were able to go in to the rooms at half time with a handy 11 point lead.
The third quarter was a very even contest with both sides playing great football at different periods. We were able to capitalise on some terrific tackling and pressure which allowed our forwards scoring opportunities. Due to unfortunate injuries to Brad Caplan and Maor Chrapot we were forced to make structural changes to the team. Nick Lewis went in to the midfield and had a direct swap with Benji Krongold. Both players were pivotal to our performance. A goal to Brandon Efron was enjoyed by all and we went in at ¾ time 16 points in front
The final quarter was a great contest. Our opposition threw everything at us in the first 10 minutes. The margin was cut to one point very quickly. Then we witnessed five minutes of composure mixed in with effort and commitment. Our tackling was elite as was our team work. We’d worked incredibly hard to get ourselves in to a winning situation and we weren’t going to let this slip. A brilliant snap by Brandon Joel gave us some breathing space however the opposition scored a goal soon after to keep life in the game. Jordan Cohen took two strong marks late in the game, one of which was the catalyst for a clutch Hutch Davis snap goal. The forward pressure was up and when Brandon Joel handballed to Toby Sheezel for an end over end dribble goal the game was done and dusted. A great win by a great group of people. The song was loud and so it should have been after such a wonderful win. We are 4-3 and look forward to playing off for 3rd spot on the ladder at home against Old Haileybury this Saturday.
