Round 5
7 May 2022
AJAX v Williamstown CYMS
Playing Williamstown for our players and supporters always brings back memories of our recent clashes. These have included a Grand Final, two incredibly close games (one win for us and one win for them), a hard fought win at Williamstown last season and the coldest day of all in 2019 when we lost by 11 goals however realised our jackets had hoods, sadly too late for some. After the disappointment of the De La Salle loss last week we understood what was required to get the four points and even up our season at 2-2.
The first quarter began with enthusiasm and voice with both sides understanding the importance of the occasion. Contested footy combined with open footy and both sides were able to move the ball well when given space. Brandon Joel was able to hit the scoreboard early and Brad Caplan scored an opportunistic goal. We were in front. Elliot Debinski was working hard along with Jordan Cohen and Toby Sheezel to give us first use of the ball.
The second quarter was an arm wrestle. Williamstown were keen to take advantage of the scoring end, where as we were quite happy to play to the situation of the game. Both sides balanced attack and defence and by half time not much had changed from the previous break. Our backline was holding up with Simon, A.Caplan and Webb playing their roles. Our forwards continued to present however reward for effort was not quite there.
The third quarter would be crucial to the result of this contest.Being ahead at half time gave the team confidence to continue to play to the plan. It was working, the reward would come. An early goal to Williamstown was nullified by a goal from a free kick to Jake Lew. A great bit of attacking play from half back resulted in Kane Nissenbaum marking in the forward pocket and passing to Matt Lincoln for a goal. Corey Zielinski was playing wonderful footy across half back. Kane Nissenbaum kicked a goal off the ground from 25 metres and when Brandon Joel scored a goal from a ruck contest later in the quarter we’d worked our way in to a winning position at the final change.
The final quarter was a wonderful contest. Both sides gave themselves opportunities to win the game. We were able to hold off a fast finishing Williamstown and prevail. Kane Nissenbaum kicked two important goals late in the quarter to help get the job done. Some great composure was displayed by Corey Zielinski and Hutch Davis when it was required. This win was a reward for the effort and commitment of our players early in the season. We will be hunting our third win when we visit Old Carey for our next game.
