Round 17
20 August 2022
AJAX v Old Haileyburians
Our season sat at 6-8 and we looked forward to visiting Princes Park for a must win clash against Old Haileybury. A win would keep our chances of playing finals alive. Old Haileybury got the better of the opening few minutes and were able to capitalise with early goals in to the breeze. We played some good footy but came up short when entering our scoring zone. A clever goal from Brad Caplan got us going. Maor Crapot was up for the challenge with his tagging role and worked hard both ways. Old Haileybury took a 19 point lead in to the first change.
We played some excellent running football in the second quarter. Our pressure was terrific and were able to force Old Haileybury in to making skills errors which caused turnovers. Our defenders were on top and our forwards were providing some good moving targets. Goals to Brad Caplan, Hutch Davis and Brandon Joel bridged to gap on the scoreboard. Richie Simon and Toby Lipton were playing strong games in the backline. The game was tied at the half time break.
Old Haileybury got their game going after half time and played some very impressive team football. They ran hard in possession of the ball and were organised forward of the ball. They outplayed us in to the wind in the third quarter working themselves in to a handy 21 point lead at ¾ time. Though we were still in the game on the scoreboard, their dominance was ominous. They finished with a 7 goal to 0 final quarter to register a convincing 70 point win.
We have one more opportunity for a win this Saturday against St Bedes at Albert Park. Both sides are on 6 wins so will be looking to end their season on a positive note before the talk of pre-season and 2023 begins.
