Match Report
Round 13
23 July 2022
AJAX v Beaumaris
Our season sat at 6-5 and we looked forward to our home game against 2ndplaced Beaumaris. There was very little wind however light rain fell for most of the afternoon. What followed was a very impressive team performance by Beaumaris that demonstrated why they are one of the contenders for the Premier B title.
The game began with a centre clearance to Beaumaris and an early shot on goal. Both their key position forwards were involved in the early play. Ominous signs. We were able to control a bit of the football and the first goal for the game was scored by Kane Nissenbaum from a free kick. Beaumaris attacked continuously throughout the quarter and fortunately for us, inaccuracy kept us in the game. Dan Cohen kicked a goal from a set shot from 40 metres to bring us closer on the scoreboard. A brilliant defensive spoil that saved a goal by Corey Zielinski was soured by the sight of him hobbling off the ground with a knee injury. Our worst fears were realised as scans have revealed a knee reconstruction is required. We’re all thinking of you Zil! Beaumaris took an 18 point lead to the first break.
The second quarter was our best quarter of the game. We matched Beaumaris and at times looked in control of the game. We were unlucky not to have two extra shots on goal however the umpires deemed infringements and paid free kicks against our marking players. Our defenders were working well together and creating plenty of run off the half back line. Jake Wrobel and Toby Lipton were working tirelessly in the ruck and Hutch Davis was gaining plenty of the footy. Dan Cohen kicked his second goal for the game from a clever snap and when Brad Caplan goaled we felt we were right in the game. A late goal to Beaumaris extended their quarter time lead to 20 points at half time.
The second half was dominated by Beaumaris. 11.12 to 1.3 sums up the complete annihilation that occurred after half time. A really disappointing performance. It’s really easy to make excuses however we all need to own the performance and redeem ourselves with a much better effort against University Blacks this week. It won’t be any easier but we can prepare well and control what we can control. We’re looking forward to seeing the response on the track during the week and on Saturday.
