AJAX v Old Carey
Playing Old Carey gave our players the opportunity to work our way to a 3-2 start to the season. The weather wasn’t perfect however the conditions at Dunshea always allow for a fast game of football. Old Carey were looking for their first win of the season. It turned out to be a real battle. It’s always great to win.
The first quarter began with a lot of physicality and voice from both teams. Elliot Debinski and Brad Caplan started the game well and when Jordan Cohen converted a goal we were able to work our way to a comfortable lead by the first break. We overused the ball on the far side of the ground too often which impacted our ability to hit the scoreboard. A lead is a lead however and we went in at quarter time with a great advantage.
The second quarter was an arm wrestle. After kicking the first two goals of the quarter, one of which was a clever snap shot by Brandon Joel, Old Carey got to work. Their transition, run and carry, and execution made us have to work that little bit harder and we were found wanting at times during the quarter. Our backline led by Adam Caplan, Nick Lewis and Hutch Davis were able to hold Old Carey back and by half time we were content with a 13 point lead.
The third quarter would be crucial to the result of this contest. We felt like if we were able to lift our effort and accountability we would able to give ourselves a winning chance. Even though not a huge amount changed on the scoreboard, we were able to gain control of the game and when Toby Lipton scored a late goal we were able to extend our lead to 19 points at ¾ time. Benji Krongold and Toby Sheezel were lively in the middle of the ground and Corey Zielinski continued to defend strongly.
The final quarter was a wonderful contest. Both sides gave themselves an opportunity to win the game with terrific pressure and tackling. Old Carey were held up by our wonderful defensive team led by Richie Simon and Adam Caplan. We were able to keep a strong finishing Old Carey side under control and two last quarter goals to Jake Lew gave us our reward. Consecutive wins and a 3-2 start to the season. Our next challenge is our visit to Beaumaris this coming Saturday.
