AJAX v Williamstown CYMS
The AJAX seniors went up against Williamstown CYMS at Gary Smorgon Oval at 2 PM. In a nail-biting contest, Nicholas Cohen was able to steal a victory kicking a match-winning goal as the Jackas won 12.12 84 to 11.13 79.
The opening quarter saw AJAX start brightly kicking the first goal of the game and having the majority of the ball in their forward 50. Williamstown were quick to reply kicking back-to-back goals and were starting to gain control. But Benji Krongold, who was great in the midfield was influential in AJAX kicking their third goal of the quarter to be up by 1 point at the first break.
The second quarter saw AJAX show tremendous tackling pressure. Despite Williamstown kicking the first goal, Jordan Cohen kicked a classy long-range goal on his left boot to answer back quickly. Fans were also delighted to see Harry Sheezel demonstrate great forward instincts, crumbin up a loose ball to kick the Jacka's second of the quarter. AJAX looked to be pulling away when Dov Paltiel kicked their third of the term and put the Jacka's up by 16-points. However, a shaky last few minute’s saw Williamstown kick 2 quick goals to only be trailing by 4 points at the main break.
The start of the third quarter saw Nicholas Cohen kick the first and AJAX dominate possession. The Jacka's were rewarded for their terrific play with goals from Jordan Cohen and Elliot Debinski putting AJAX up 22 points. The team were up and about. Daniel Janover-Rocha pulled off a great smother and defender Richie Simon took plenty of intercept marks. Unfortunately, Williamstown began to wrestle back momentum late in the quarter and were able to go into three-quarter time with the scores level.
The final quarter was a nail biter. It was a tightly contested period with neither team wanting to go down. Despite great play from AJAX, Williamstown were equal to the challenge. They kicked 2 goals in the last quarter which was enough to give them a one-point lead heading into the final two minutes. AJAX needed someone to stand up to force them over the line for a win. Up stepped Nicholas Cohen. With a ball up in the goal square, Elliot Debinski tapped the footy into a dangerous area. Cohen showed great forward instincts, following the ball and was able to soccer it over the line to give AJAX a five point lead and the victory.
