Round 11
26 June 2021 Away
AJAX v Williamstown CYMS
The AJAX seniors returned to action, away to Williamstown at Fearon Oval, with the return of supporters to community sport galvanising the Jackas.
Despite some early missed set-shots, the Jackas opened the contest. AJAX began to pile on the pressure early with a barrage of entries into the forward 50 with Williamstown initially unable to surmount the challenges they were posed, scoring two to open their account and jumping to a double-digit lead. Despite the tempo slowing down as the quarter progressed, the Jackas ensured that they were able to maintain a miniature lead heading into the second quarter, as Williamstown refused to let up.
The second term commenced in a relatively cagey affair with an abundance of end-to-end football taking place with neither side able to break away from the pack early, with Williamstown taking the lead for the first time mid-way through the second. Yet, the Jackas fought back instantly as they piled on the pressure during the second half, capitalizing on loose balls and fighting back to ensure that they led by a comfortable margin at the time of the half.
Williamstown commenced the second half with a goal of their own, illustrating their fight and will to win despite a lack-lustre end to the first half. As the tensions continued to boil and the sky began to clear for the majority of the second half AJAX weren’t able to close down a stoic Williamstown defence despite possessing the majority of the ball in their forward 50, galvanised by the efforts of Toby Sheezel and Nicholas Cohen. Despite opening the scoring within the quarter, Williamstown staunchly replied with four quick fire goals to cut the lead to two, promising an intriguing final quarter.
Commencing the final quarter with a rocket start, the Jackas kicked off the scoring, with three pivotal goals to stretch the lead into double figures. Thankfully, despite Williamstown attempting to claw their way back into the fixture, drifting the ball past the centre-square on multitudes of occasions the Jackas secured a sizeable victory, with Toby Lipton kicking six in a well deserved win.
Goals: Lipton 6, N Cohen, Ja Ludski, Israel, Jo Ludski, Nissenbaum
