AJAX v De La Salle
The seniors returned to action on Saturday afternoon against De La Salle where after a cagey opening few minutes, the Jackas began to pick the gaps with relative ease, finding out the inconsistencies in the De La Salle’s transitional play. Yet the intense press by De La Salle nullified any chance of the Jackas to move forward, with the utilisation of the Oval proving crucial to the success of the Jackas. A tremendous movement in transition found the path of Adam Caplan, who struck it on the 50 metre line with ease, slotting it home against the wind. Throughout the remainder of the first quarter, the Jackas were sublime at closing De La Salle down in the key moments. Benji Krongold at the heart of midfield was sublime, showcasing his quick thinking with ease. Following a magnificent mark just behind the goal square and a goal blitz, the Jackas took the lead heading into the end of the first term.
The second quarter commenced with De La Salle taking the lead at the mid-way point despite the Jackas applying the pressure necessitated to remain in the fixture. De La Salle slowly but surely extended their lead, furthermore troubling the Jackas as the half-way point of the tie was reaching its climax. However, a late AJAX fight-back ensured that the sides were only one point apart come the end of the half’s closure, with Toby Lipton impressing with his set shot abilities.
The second half commenced with the Jackas needing to pull away from the weight of pressure, however De La Salle’s dominance ensured that AJAX had a mountain to climb, holding the majority of the possession and scoring multiple unanswered goals to stretch their lead to almost 30, rendering a fightback from the Jackas to be an immensely difficult task.
The final term saw the Jackas partially fight back, courtesy of a valiant performance by the likes of Toby Sheezel and Dov Paltiel as the Jackas scored two key goals. Yet, the comeback wasn’t completed, with the Jackas losing out to De La Salle by 24 points, with work to be taken in the coming weeks ahead.
