AJAX v Old Brighton - Away
Don’t know about you, but coaching the game last night, I was cold. Like really really cold
I don’t think I’m cut out for twilight games and if there is going to be more of them, I’m going to have to take a more serious look at my winters footballing wardrobe
I thought the game against Old Brighton challenged us across many aspects including the coaching
Personally, from the bench it felt like we were constantly trying to change our rotations and structures to negate our oppositions strengths for much of the game
I’ve always thought you should play to your own strengths and system and make the opposition adjust to that. But yesterday, well we found ourselves constantly on the backfoot. Coaching can be tricky at times, especially trying to find the right balance between structuring play around your strengths vs trying to curtail whatever we perceive are the oppositions strengths. I’m not sure we got the balance right yesterday, and again, to be honest, that may have had more to do with the team line up and rotations that were decided on before the game. The coaching will improve …
From a team perspective, we struggled to change and adapt in a meaningful way to the ebbs and flows of the game. We didn’t make enough of our chances when we had the momentum and when going inside our attacking 50 while at other times, particularly later in the game, there was significant disconnect between the structure we had vs the structure we needed. We weren’t brave enough to embrace what was required to win.
Football is a funny thing. Losing provides better learning opportunities than winning does, especially 100+ point wins! But then again, that’s football – like in life, it’s a constant process of learning
Thanks to both Johnny Klein and David Southwick for helping out yesterday and all the parents that came along for weathering the cold too. Special mention to Jay Hyphen (junior member of the famed MMWH) for covering 20k’s delivering many incoherent, confusing and scrambled messages to the playing group. Sending our best to “H” as embarks on his most important diplomatic trip bringing some Ozzie to Colorado and to COVID for dropping by against the odds to provide some well-intentioned moral support despite looking entirely off colour
Anyway, it wasn’t all bad news this week .. the good was that in the seniors Richie Simon kicked 7 goals, Jordan Cohen kicked 7 goals and so did the Thirds!
Goals: Hendel 3, Kalmus 2, Lowe 1, Tye Marabel-Whitburn 1
Bests: Tahl Marabel-Whitburn, Tye Marabel-Whitburn, Siegel, Jacobs, Simonovich, Carp
