AJAX v St Kevins
Going into their second consecutive night game, the AJAX Sundays were faced with their biggest challenge yet in the form of an undefeated St. Kevin’s side.
With the scars of a prelim final loss against that very team still being carried by some of the AJAX players, the enormity and importance of the game was felt by all, including the large attendance of supporters from both clubs.
The first three quarters proved to be the spectacle that all had come to expect, with the game being played at a high speed and physicality. AJAX were able to hold the lead for the majority, but never led by more than two goals, the margin at each break being under 6 points highlighting the hotly contested nature of the game and inability of either team to fully gain the upper hand.
At three quarter time, with the game very much in the balance, coach Ryan White pulled the trigger on a move that had previously been successful in the Harmony Cup earlier in the year. He instructed the team to clear out the forward line for the dangerous Amir Meyerowitz who already had 3 goals to his name.
Despite St. Kevin’s levelling the scores multiple times in the final term, the move proved to be gold with Meyerowitz booting 3 goals in the term taking his final tally to 6, while captain Zev Aron and Josh Jones each added long range goals to silence the rowdy St. Kevin’s crowd in a 5 goal to 2 last quarter to run out the game 21-point winners.
The memorable win moves the Jackas into 2nd spot, setting up a top of the table clash with Old Xaverians next week.
Goals: Meyerowitz 6, Jones 3, Alford 1, Aron 1,
Bests: Meyerowitz, Jedwab, Jones, Roth, Bierenkrant, Aron
