Round 1 match review: AJAX vs St Bernards

The Sunday 1s made their premier division debut against a fresh St Bernards outfit. In their welcome to the top division AJAX went down 33-8 in the first quarter as the high level of competition quickly became apparent. However a strong second quarter rally saw AJAX bring the margin back to one point with a huge goal surge. The first half was highlighted by a debut goal by Lior Meyerowitz, and a second quarter where AJAX showed how dangerous their best footy is, 41-40 to St Bernards.

The second half didn't bode as well for AJAX, as St Bernards pulled away from the game to finish ahead 96-63 with fast and efficient ball use capitalizing on any turnovers. In a tough game Lior Smart stood tall off of the half-back line, playing through an injury taken in a courageous marking contest to provide constant run and gun footy from the backline. Overall, a young and hungry AJAX team came off the field disappointed with the result, but encouraged by strong signs that we can mix it with the best, and strong performances from all players on debut.
