AJAX v Old Xaverians 2

Round 15 featured the first night game of the season for the Jackas, in a finals shaping match against the 2nd placed Xavs 2s. With only two games left of the regular season, AJAX needed one win to secure their finals spots, and two wins can lock them in to a 2nd placed finish on the ladder, as such Wednesday night was a must win to keep the top 2 finish alive.

The Wednesday night special kicked off with high energy after an on the run finish by Eitan Potash opened up the scoring for AJAX, who in an emphatic first quarter took a string of goals to finish the term up by 2 goals. But the game wasn't without its challenges, as a well equipped Xavs outfit showed why they are a finals worthy team with a 2nd quarter rally, which saw them pile on 3 unanswered goals in quick succession - the Jackas were on the ropes. But as they have shown in recent games, AJAX plays the minutes better than any other team, and was able to roll with the punches, but also throw some of their own thanks to a terrific wrong foot snap by Jake Jones.  Going into half time with an 8 point lead, AJAX was ready for a good battle.

The second half saw the energy rise a level, as the now full strength crowd packed the sidelines for a thriller under the lights. AJAX looked strong in the 3rd quarter, kicking toward the crowded end of the oval as they took the game back on their terms, emphasized by strong tackles, smothers and pressure in typical AJAX brand footy. The team was able to lift a level above Xavs to regain the momentum of the game, winning the 3rd quarter by a goal to increase the lead to 15 points.
And in a special 4th quarter showing, AJAX piled on a slew of goals, culminating a 4 goal lead with Lior Smart finding his way up forward for a goal. The final scores read 99-77 with AJAX running out hard-fought winners in a night time spectacle with the crowd behind them. Amir Meyerowitz continued his hot form with 6 goals to show, including a dribble kick from a tight angle as he pulled all of the tricks out of his bag. 

On Sunday, AJAX has a chance to lock in a top-2 ladder finish with a win over St Bernards (1-1 against each other this year) in a double-header at home, with the Sunday 2s playing their first finals game immediately after, it's a must watch game, on a must be there day.
