AJAX v Oakleigh - Away
Round 9 saw AJAX face a winless Oakleigh away at Scammell Reserve on a sunny afternoon, coming away with a 105 point victory bolstering their percentage position in the top 4, captained by Kane Nissenbaum.
Coming off a bye, the Jackas were slightly off from the beginning, with Oakleigh scoring the first major of the day in front of their home crowd. However the Jackas quickly adjusted and warmed into the game, managing to extend their lead to 20 at quarter time.
Reflecting on the first quarter defined by tough contested footy, AJAX noticed Oakleighs aim to force repeat stoppages and create a highly contested game. The second quarter saw the Jackas find their momentum and break through stoppages, spreading the Oakleigh defence, giving forwards Richie Simon, Jordan Cohen and Toby Sheezel efficient looks on goal. AJAX led by 10 goals at half time after a successful 8 goal second quarter.
Whilst the lead was convincing at half time, Coach Oswald urged the players to continue to break the game open and give the forwards the best opportunities possible. AJAX was relentless until the end, scoring 6 goals in the 3rd quarter and the 7 in the final quarter.
Richie Simon and Jordan Cohen both led the scoring with 7 majors each, whilst mercurial forward Toby Sheezel kicked 4 and tall forward Justin Vogel claiming 3 of his own. Following another massive haul, Simon now leads the competition goal scoring by 1.
Matthew Lincoln and Charles Hamilton impressed playing off half back, creating many plays and intercepting in dangerous areas of the ground, while captain Kane Nissenbaum was influential in stoppages and provided physicality and pressure.
Goals: Simon 7, Cohen 7, Sheezel 4, Vogel 3, Krongold 2, Hamilton 1, B Caplan 1,
Bests: Simon, Cohen, Sheezel, Lincoln, Hamilton, Nissenbaum
