AJAX v Glen Eira
The girls were looking to continue the momentum built from the past couple of weeks into this game against a tough Glen Eira side who were sitting 2nd on the ladder.
With a few out we were stretched numbers wise, but believed if we played to our structures we would perform well.
Kicking against a strong breeze in the 1st quarter we started well and had a lot of the play. Osrin was giving us first use with A Caplan and J Caplan starting well again and having a fair bit of the ball. Our defenders were defending strongly with Sacks very strong over the ball and with Gabriel and Burstin reliable in defence, we went in a goal down at the break.
Kicking with the wind in the 2nd quarter, we had all the play, but couldn’t convert. Zielinski was coming into her own and put through the teams first and her first as a senior Jackette. Grek, Micmacher and Mrocki weren’t letting anything though down back. Shustin and Blum were everywhere gathering possessions and Hall was having her best game for the club. Ari Goldman and Jess Marget continually drove the ball forward to give us many chances. We didn’t take the most of our opportunities kicking 1.5 to 1.0 for the quarter. We trailed by a point at the half.
We had to hold against the strong wind in the 3rd quarter to give ourselves a chance. Shustin was playing back this quarter and was resolute in defence, continually driving the ball out, as were Sacks, Gabriel, Mrocki and Grek. Glen Eira was throwing everything at us, but we held firm. A & J Caplan were both strong over the ball, Diamond and Klooger were really coming into the game and Blum was again dangerous across the wing. Zielinski was proving a handful for the Glen Eira defence. We went into the last quarter 8 points down, but full of belief.
The last quarter was played in our half, but in windy conditions we found scoring difficult. Zielinski was now being double teamed, but that didn’t stop her from kicking a goal after a strong mark. Down by a point with 8 minutes to go and the momentum was with us. After peppering the goals we scored a point. Scores were now level with 4 minutes to play. The strong AJAX crowd was right behind us and when Zielinski kicked her 3rd it capped of a fantastic debut and put us a goal in front with 2 minutes to play. We held on strongly to score an incredible win that we’ll all remember for some time to come.
Goals: Zielinski 3
Best: Shustin, Zielinski, A Caplan, Sacks, Osrin, Burstin
