Match Report
Round 4
30 April 2022
AJAX v Power House - Away
The pre game message today was loud and clear. It was all about belief and opportunity. The coaching group all had a huge belief in the players today that they could get the job done. The playing group believed as well. There was a huge opportunity to create a great moment today – and from that a great memory. It was going to be a very tough game and we were down in numbers and personnel.
In windy conditions with a heavy deck, a strong start was going to be crucial. The girls were on today and were set to give it their all.
With a good crowd, it was our debutant, Tia Blum, who spun out of a congested pack, swung around onto her left boot and slotted the first goal of the game from around 35 metres out. It was only minutes into the first quarter and her first kick as a Jackette. It was a great moment and one we’ll all never forget. Kicking against the breeze we lead by 5 points at the first break. Our defenders were resolute, lead by Juz Gabriel, Dan ‘chief’ Abraham and Hayley Mrocki. Sofia Micmacher in her 2nd game was also doing a great job.
Kicking against the breeze in the 2nd quarter was tough, but we held tight repelling many of their attacks. J Caplan was outstanding in continually attacking the ball, together with A Caplan (who had only stepped off a plane a couple of hours earlier) and was relentless in her play. Ariella Goldman was rucking against a terrific player, giving away many inches in height but fought so hard all day, which was inspiring. We took a 5 point lead into the main break.
The third quarter was pivotal, kicking into the wind we defended strongly. Amira and Abraham (both off their sickbeds!) were having great games as was Burstin who was in everything. Grek was up against a strong opponent and given a job to do was holding her own. Blum and Aarons were also finding a lot of the footy. Again we lead by 5 points at the last change.
We asked the girls to believe at ¾ time and that they did. Power House threw everything at us on their home soil, but we were relentless. We missed a couple of opportunities to put the game away and Power House had the game on their terms for the last 8 minutes. We stood strong though and held on by 7 points. Shustin and Fleiszig were great in the last quarter.
Next week we play Latrobe University.
Goals: Blum, A Caplan
Best: Marget, Blum, Burstin, J Caplan, A Caplan, Gabriel
