Round 2
AJAX v Oakleigh
The girls were looking to build on a solid round 1 victory and faced a strong Oakleigh side.
After several enforced changes and 3 debutants the girls started brightly. Taylor was looking strong up forward and booted our first for the game. With a couple of near misses the pressure was on from the outset. J Gabriel, Newitt and Mrocki were strong down back and Osrin had a good quarter in the ruck. We took a 1 point lead into the first break.
The game opened right up in the second quarter, but not to our advantage. Oakleigh out marked and out ran us and we seemed to be chasing for the whole quarter. A Caplan and J Caplan were trying hard to stem the flow, but the pressure was just too much and Oakleigh took a 26 point lead into the half.
We tried hard in the 3rd quarter and despite really positive signs from debutant C Aarons and second gamer N Gabriel as well as a 2nd goal from Taylor, it was again a disappointing quarter as we went into the last break 34 points in arrears.
With first gamers Silverstone and Micmacher improving by the quarter, the girls, although undermanned, never stopped trying. Goldman, Marget, Shustin and Fleiszig never stopped running.
Oakleigh continued their dominance in the last quarter and the margin would have been greater if not for the defensive skills of Mrocki.
We have a couple of weeks off to lick our wounds and prepare for a huge game against Powerhouse.
Goals: Taylor 2
