Round 11
25 June 2022
AJAX v Power House
Playing only our second game at home for the season, we face local rivals Powerhouse in a game where a win could push us into the top 4 and back in finals calculations.
In sunny, but windy conditions we were kicking into the breeze in the first quarter. A good start to the game was important and it was a great centre clearance from J Caplan who drove the ball forward to young gun Zielinski. She was rewarded with a great tackle and slotted the first goal of the game. Power House responded with the next, but with our midfield of Shustin, J Caplan and Marget on top early and Osrin winning the taps we continually drove the ball forward. Zielinski then scored her second with an incredible dribble goal from the boundary. Our defence lead by Gabriel, Mrocki, Amira, Newitt and Grek held up into the breeze and gave our runners every chance. We lead 2 goals to 1 at the first break, into the wind.
The second quarter began brightly and the Jackettes had the ball camped in the forward line. Klooger was having a day out in what was her best (and unfortunately her last) game of the season. Continually driving the ball forward, Klooger, along with J Caplan, A Caplan, Shustin and Goldman our forwards we getting a lot of looks. Zielinski slotted through another 2 for the quarter and after having all the play, we lead by 20 points at half time.
Kicking against the wind in the 3rd quarter, we did not want to let Power House back into the game. In a battle of the defences we stood strong. Gabriel was impassable in the backline and with Newitt standing strong and Amira and Goldman relentless around the ball, we only allowed Power House 1 scoring shot in the quarter, for a goal. We took a 2 goal lead into the last quarter, but the girls were ready to finish strongly.
We controlled the game in the last quarter, kicking 3 goals and 4 behinds to no score. Zielinski had a day out and finished with 7 goals in a incredible performance for the club, with some great hit outs to advantage by Osrin giving our midfielders lead by J Caplan, Shustin, Marget and A Caplan giving our forwards many looks. Hall and Micmacher had great games with some opportunities forward and Diamond and Burstin were solid throughout.
It was also nice to host Powerhouse in an after match function where co-captains Jess Marget and Justine Gabriel had some nice words to say.
Our biggest rivals, Glen Eira, await next week for Round 12 at 11.40am Gary Smorgon Oval, Albert Park.
Goals: Zielinski 7
Bests: Amira, Shustin, Osrin, Zielinski, Klooger, J Caplan
