Round 18
Sunday 4 August 2024
AJAX v Old Xaverians - Home
For the first time in a month the whole team was back together. With the ‘pups’ coming back from a trip in Israel, and Josh Jones’ 100th game, spirits were high, and the excitement could be felt across the changing rooms.
AJAX started incredibly strongly, with a home crowd supporting and the sun coming out, we took the game right to the undefeated Xavs side, resulting in a very even quarter.
Coming into halftime the game was again just about level, with AJAX showing again why they are the team to challenge the so far unbeatable Xavs side. Midfielders were scoring goals, with segman, zevva and Potash combining for 5 goals from the midfield by half time. Quick ball movement was the way to go for AJAX, with most goals coming through direct and accurate transitioning. The 3rd quarter showed much of the same in a very even contest, as Xavs appeared dominant around stoppages, and AJAX shined with their quick defense to offense transitioning. Going into the fourth quarter, AJAX was down by 4 points, and were determined to put the game to bed, after the 3rd term saw arm wrestles and momentum swings keeping the game electric.
Unfortunately, Xavs ran out the game in good fashion, piling on 5 unanswered goals to come out on top. Closing the day coach Whitey reflected on the learnings the team took, as major confidence was taken out of all the boys from israel managing to run out the game in a first return to action, as well as trialling new tactics across the ground. Going into finals AJAX holds their position in 3rd, one that wasn’t going to change regardless of the outcome of round 16
