Round 13
Saturday 13 July 2024 - Away
AJAX v Williamstown
Episode 11 – Williamstown
If you’re really really old, you’ll know that Williamstown was Melbourne’s first sea port long before that union run mess of a place we now have
For me personally, my first trip to Williamstown was back around 1990 when a client of mine had this really great idea to turn the local pub on Nelson Road in to a Titanic themed restaurant. At the time of going there the only things I knew about the Titanic was that it sank in 1912 out in the North Atlantic Ocean with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet on board. The restaurant itself was as weird as one could imagine complete with a vibrating floor and the sound effects of a sinking ship and terrible food to boot. Went there once … that was enough!
For a minute there on Saturday it looked like the our team was going to follow Leonardo and Kate down the gurgler. Four goals down at quarter time, five down at half time and many looking to their neighbour to see who was going to be the one to get the momentum back our way
The team found itself far from home and well beyond the Waze mapping system with many of the team away travelling on their yachts on the Mediterranean, camping in 6 star palaces of Bali or Thailand (one soggy one following the scent of love to a far away place like Spain)
It was one of those moments we’ll look back on – the “backs to the wall” moment
After some pointed words from Coach J and the our runner Izzy, out we came after half time rejewvinated and ready for the challenge. We weren’t going to leave Williamstown without a “W” in our pocket. From there we chased, harassed and worked out how to kick straight.
By three quarter time we had squared the ledger and by the end with famous goals from Brad Lowe, Jack Lehrer, Alon Schmidt and Tyler Southwick the day was won
I was really proud of the group for their capacity to face and overcome the slow start and half time deficit. Was really proud of how you all worked so hard together, supported and encouraged each other. Was really proud of the way you celebrated each other’s great moments. That’s what a team is all about
But beyond that, I was most proud of the group when confronted with some inappropriate language from the opposition, that we stood as one and called that behaviour out. We sat in the room and allowed that player to own what he said, to apologise for it and for us to be able to accept it in the spirit it was provided. Proud
Before we close out this episode, thanks to team of Jonah (my son) and Izzy Worth for taking on the coaching and running roles and doing such a great job at it. To Zev for getting Ryan White, one of the original passengers on the Titanic, out of his bed to help make up the numbers for the team. To Jono Machlin, Charlie Efron and Daniel Raiter for helping make up the numbers and their contribution on the day
As always, a special thanks to all the parents and friends who made their way out to Williamstown to support the team. Proud to have you there with us to celebrate this win
